Approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime.

That number is a reminder that breast health deserves our attention. It does not mean we should live in fear. It means we should take our health seriously and make time for the care we often put off.

Self Care Is More Than Taking a Day Off

Self-care is not only about rest, skincare, or doing something nice for yourself.

It also means keeping up with recommended health screenings, knowing what is normal for your breasts, paying attention to changes, and talking to your healthcare provider when something does not feel right.

Know Your Own Normal

Breasts can naturally change with age, hormones, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the menstrual cycle. But a new or unusual change should not simply be ignored.

Changes worth discussing with a healthcare professional can include a new lump, a change in breast size or shape, skin changes, nipple changes, unusual discharge, or persistent pain.

Most breast changes are not cancer, but it is important to have concerning changes checked rather than trying to diagnose them yourself.

Screening Can Save Lives

Breast cancer screening can help find cancer before there are noticeable symptoms. The right screening schedule depends on your age, personal risk, family history, and the recommendations where you live.

If you are unsure when you should start screening or how often you need it, ask your healthcare provider. Do not let another busy year pass without having that conversation.

Do Not Put Yourself Last

Women spend so much time caring for everyone else that their own appointments can become the thing they keep postponing.

Your health matters too.

Make the appointment. Go to the screening. Ask the question. Pay attention to your body.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. Sometimes, it can save your life.
